BBC Symphony Orchestra/Oramo

Violinist Inmo Yang playing his violin

Sakari Oramo, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and violinist Inmo Yang raise the roof in three dazzling concertos – one for violin and two for the whole orchestra.

When a composer writes a concerto, they stretch a performer to the very limit – and reveal something of themselves, too. Béla Bartók and Grażyna Bacewicz put the whole orchestra on dazzling display, while Dvořák’s Violin Concerto places one particular player up front and lets them sing and dance for joy.

But there’s more to each of these pieces than just great tunes and brilliant colours: and in his BBC SO debut, the remarkable young Korean violinist Inmo Yang, who recently won the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition, is sure to find all the tenderness at the heart of Dvořák’s Concerto. And as Sakari Oramo continues to explore the music of Grażyna Bacewicz, he compares her brilliant Concerto for Orchestra to the darkness and defiance of Bartók’s great wartime masterpiece. They have quite a lot in common…

This performance will finish at approximately 9.40pm, including a 20-minute interval
