Rose Plays Julie (15)

Ann Skelly in a still from Rose Plays Julie

A young woman decides to find her birth mother, only to uncover another secret entirely, in this moody and poised debut feature from writer-directors Christine Malloy and Joe Lawlor.

In Dublin, veterinary student Rose (Ann Skelly) discovers on her birth certificate that she was named Julie before her adoption. Resolved to finally meet her birth mother, actor Ellen (Orla Brady), Rose investigates before finally revealing her identity. Yet this in turn provokes another, unexpected revelation about her father (Aidan Gillan), that compels Rose to assume the parallel name of Julie and get close to the truth.

Confident in its stillness, Malloy and Lawlor’s stylish film quietly explores questions of identity, fate and revenge, anchored by a fascinating central performance from Skelly, Brady’s complicated depiction and a superbly slippery performance from Gillan.
