Kaurismäki's controlled melodrama is, in its minimalism, perhaps the most flawless gem of his career – paving the way for his ultimate international breakthrough. Kati Outinen, who in 2002 was lauded the Best Actress at Cannes Film Festival, plays in this role of her lifetime a poor girl, who never reaches the land of fantasies depicted in tangos or novels, but instead suffers in her job and at the hands of her parents and boyfriend until deciding to retaliate.
It's followed by a treasure of Finnish film novella. When a young man returns from the city to spend the summer in his homestead of 1960's North Karelia, he meets a blond, erotic woman who makes his head spin. This warm-hearted film captures almost surrealistically the both nostalgic and merciless emotions of youth and the magic of the Finnish Tango.
