Sound of Metal (15)

a drummer with bleached blonde hair and no shirt

A heavy-metal drummer suddenly loses his hearing and in desperation turns to a shelter for deaf, recovering addicts.

With six Academy Award nominations, this powerful drama is a must watch. Riz Ahmed's performance is riveting and heartbreaking as Ruben, a recovering addict and drummer touring across America with his girlfriend, Lou (Olivia Cooke). Whilst on the road Ruben suddenly suffers extreme hearing loss, to Lou's alarm he starts to spiral and she fears he'll fall into old habits.

Ruben joins a shelter run by deaf army veteran Joe (Paul Raci), where he starts to learn how to live with his deafness and what it means to be part of the deaf community. As he struggles to come to terms with the change, Ruben is left to make decisions with serious consequences.

Screenings in Cinema 3 on Wed 19 and Thu 20 May include a recorded Q&A hosted by Kaleem Aftab with the film’s writer and director Darius Marder, and stars Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci.
