Border Crossings
Fourteen Scandinavian Artists
This exhibition showed the work of fourteen of Scandinavia's most exciting artists from the late 19th century to the present day.
Highlights of the exhibition included a selection of important late works by the leading Norwegian artist, Edvard Munch (1863- 1944). It also gave the first major showing in this country since 1962 of paintings by Sweden's renowned playwright and painter August Strindberg (184-9- 1912), and the highly acclaimed landscapes and figurative drawings of his contemporary, the Swedish artist, Carl Fredrik Hill (1849-1911).
Other major figures include the Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914- 1973), and Iceland's Johannes Kjarval (1885-1972) shown together with a selection of works by contemporary artists Per Kirkeby from Denmark, the Finnish painter, Marika Mäkelä, the Norwegian, Olav Christopher Jenssen and Icelandic artists Hulda Hákon and Sigurður Guðmundsson, exploring the relationships in their work.
