Alphonse Mucha

The exhibition focussed on Mucha’s work in fin-de-siècle Paris where he first came to fame for his remarkable posters of Sarah Bernhardt, and where he developed and refined the richly decorative ‘Mucha’ style.

Encompassing his American travels, tours of Eastern Europe and Russia, the exhibition included Mucha’s designs for jewellery, sculpture, architecture and theatrical designs, magazine covers and book jackers, together with working drawings and his own photographs. A highlight was one of a vast cycle of paintings he made in his later years in his native Czechoslovakia devoted to the history and political aspirations of the Slav people.
