The Sixties
Art Scene in London
With rarely seen and rediscovered works, this exhibition challenged prominent notions of The Sixties.
Combining well-known and forgotten works, this exhibition moved away from the stereotypes of Sixties London and into a broader understanding of the iconic decade. While Peter Blake may always be known as the man who created the Sgt. Pepper sleeve, this exhibition introduced audiences to his fine art practice.
The exhibition covered a broad range of art making including kinetic art, junk art and happenings and considered the pioneering work of London’s artists including William Green’s pop-art image of Elvis, which predates Andy Warhol’s by five years and Pauline Boty’s celebration of Marilyn.
This exhibition was selected by Dr David Mellor of Sussex University and organised by Barbican Art Gallery.
