Potters in Parallels
This was the first major exhibition held in a London public gallery to explore the careers of the most innovative of all post-war potters – Lucie Rie and Hans Coper.
In 1946, Hans Coper (1920-1981) joined Lucie Rie (1902-1995) in her Albion Mews studio to assist in the production of brightly coloured ceramic buttons for the fashion trade. This was the beginning of a close friendship which was to last for 35 years.
The exhibition explored the tableware produced jointly by Rie and Coper at Albion Mews between 1949 and 1958 and went on to assess both their careers in the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on their different interpretations of vessels.
This exhibition was selected by Margot Coatts and organised by Barbican Art Gallery, the exhibition installation is designed by John Pawson, one of Britain’s leading architects.
