Propaganda Session Seven

Shabaka and the Ancestors + Maâlem Houssam Guinia

The Ancestors standing in a bare room

Shabaka and the Ancestors were due to perform as part of the Propaganda weekend. They have been rescheduled to perform a headline show on Sun 24 Jan 2021.

Shabaka Hutchings’ collaboration with The Ancestors is the culmination of his regular visits to South Africa. The band venture deep into the spiritual jazz world, with diversions into township grooves, Caribbean rhythms and psychedelic reveries. The collective of musicians from across continents make perfect partners, with lithe sax floating over spiky brass interjections.

Opening the concert is Maâlem Houssam Guinia, the son of Mahmoud Guinia, a revered figure within North African Gnawa music. Combining traditional music, spiritual lyricism and dance, the Gnawa tradition is entrancing and hypnotic. Writer and musician Anthony Joseph will perform interventions of readings and spoken word throughout the evening.

This performance will start at the advertised start time and running times will be confirmed closer to the event
