Bacon's Eye
Offering an exciting new way to look at the artist, this exhibition featured over 200 works on paper attributed to Francis Bacon, one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.
Although Francis Bacon never officially acknowledged the existence of his work on paper, several collections have emerged since his death in 1992. This exhibition featured a small number of beautiful drawings by Bacon acquired by Tate, and a larger number of works belonging to the private collector Barry Joule, given to him by Bacon shortly before the artist’s death.
Bacon’s Eye featured a unique group of erotic and grotesque oil sketches, the ‘X Album’ and found images manipulated using techniques such as drawing, painting, collage and frottage, demonstrating the inventiveness of Bacon’s working methods. They include manipulated photographs of some of Bacon’s most famous motifs such as the screaming nurse from Eisenstein’s film Battleship Potemkin and Velazquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X.
