BBC Singers/Jeannin

Mozart & Haydn

Sofi conducting with great feeling

The BBC Singers and their Chief Conductor Sofi Jeannin are joined by the period instruments of The English Concert for two masterpieces of Austrian classical choral music.

Exhausted, overworked and under-resourced, Joseph Haydn faced a deadline for a new Mass in the summer of 1798. In the face of adversity, Haydn delivered the most celebrated setting he would write – a score simmering with tension that ultimately explodes, with gleaming trumpets, into the radiant brightness.

Eighteen years earlier, Mozart had written his last sacred work for Salzburg Cathedral, a setting of the Vespers founded on a dazzling Magnificat revelling in opulence and effect.

The performance will finish at approximately 9.15pm. It includes a 20 minute interval.
