BBC SO/Madaras

Gergely Madaras conducting

From shadows to light, experience a concert that explores the miraculous power of orchestration from the 1920s to the 2010s.

This concert begins as an exploration of shadows and recesses. Ravel found inspiration in the fantasies and nightmares of Aloysius Bertrand’s collection of nocturnal stories Gaspard de la nuit for his most revolutionary piano work, heard here in a spellbinding orchestration. It’s the orchestra that holds the secrets in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s double concerto, even as two violinists are entwined in reflection and conversation.

After Michael Jarrell’s own shadowy Ombres, Gergely Madaras and the orchestra burst into colour courtesy of Ravel’s orchestration of the monumental journey towards a shattering climax that is Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

The performance will finish at approximately 9.30pm. It includes a 20 minute interval.
