Breaking Ground: Architecture by Women

How do we put women at the centre of architectural practice and what are the issues facing women architects today? Join us for a panel conversation to debate this and more.

‘Would they still call me a diva if I was a man?’ asked the architect Zaha Hadid, challenging more than 100 years of stereotypes about female architects. A century in which women were refused entry to architecture schools, denied degrees when they had completed courses, and even now, where women occupy just ten per cent of the highest-ranking jobs in architecture firms.

Jane Hall, recipient of the British Council Lina Bo Bardi Fellowship (2013) and founding member of Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble, leads a conversation around recently published Breaking Ground: Architecture by Women.

Speakers will discuss the ways of achieving parity and how to put women at the centre of practice. Expect questions such as; 'why is gender activism necessary?' and 'how do we begin to think beyond gender in relation to architectural practice?'

Breaking Ground: Architecture by Women (Phaidon, September 2019) is a ground-breaking visual survey of architecture designed by women from the early twentieth century to the present day, the book features more than 200 incredible buildings from all over the world.
