Breaking Ground: Architecture by Women

Architecture on Stage

The Museo de Arte de São Paulo, designed by Lina Bo Bardi, Italian-born Brazilian modernist architect.

How do we put women at the centre of architectural practice and what are the issues facing women architects today? Join us for a panel conversation to debate this and more.

‘Would they still call me a diva if I was a man?’ asked the architect Zaha Hadid, challenging more than 100 years of stereotypes about female architects. A century in which women were refused entry to architecture schools, denied degrees when they had completed courses, and even now, where women occupy just ten per cent of the highest-ranking jobs in architecture firms.

Jane Hall, recipient of the British Council Lina Bo Bardi Fellowship (2013) and founding member of Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble, leads a conversation around recently published Breaking Ground: Architecture by Women.

Speakers will discuss the ways of achieving parity and how to put women at the centre of practice. Expect questions such as; 'why is gender activism necessary?' and 'how do we begin to think beyond gender in relation to architectural practice?'

Breaking Ground: Architecture by Women (Phaidon, September 2019) is a ground-breaking visual survey of architecture designed by women from the early twentieth century to the present day, the book features more than 200 incredible buildings from all over the world. The book will be available to buy on the night.
