The Mexico Years
This exhibition brought together works by Tina Modotti and Edward Weston, two key figures of Modernist photography.
Modotti and Weston worked together in post-revolutionary Mexico during the 1920s and produced an extraordinary range of photographs. Featuring over 150 works by the two artists from this period, the exhibition demonstrated how each responded to, and participated in, what has been called ‘The Mexican Renaissance’.
The exhibition followed the work and lives of Modotti and Weston from the early 1920s in Los Angeles, California, where they met, until the early 1930s. Focusing on their photographs produced in Mexico, the exhibition examines Modotti’s artistic achievements, which had often been obscured by the legend surrounding her love affair with Weston and her political life and showed how the Mexican years helped Weston develop his distinctive Modernist style.
