Known as the “Frank Sinatra of Tunisia”, Hedi Jouini is the most popular musical star in Tunisian history. His songs continue to inspire revolutionaries and conservatives
alike, striking at the heart of the post-colonial social and political upheaval of Tunisia and its continuing search for identity in the wake of the Arab Spring. Yet, despite being a peerless popular figure, Hedi Jouini kept his fame hidden from his family.
This contradictory reality is at the heart of this film, a documentary by his British-Tunisian granddaughter and filmmaker Claire Belhassine who returned to Tunisia to question why she never knew of his fame.
The result is a beautiful story of love and family, celebrity and music and – in uncovering the true stories of a man and his music – a fascinating insight into Tunisia’s cultural evolution.
