Charles Hazlewood with Army of Generals and The British Paraorchestra
PLAY!
Sunday 18 March 2018 / Barbican Hall / 19:30
Tickets £15 – 20 plus booking fee

Internationally renowned conductor Charles Hazlewood embarks on a journey of well-known classical repertoire from the soundtracks of the gaming world. Titled PLAY! this concert promises a symphonic rollercoaster ride of classic computer game themes alongside well-known orchestral masterworks, including music from Holst’s The Planets and Strauss’ tone poems.

From the high-octane soundtrack of Grand Theft Auto to the acclaimed theme for Tetris and the cinematic soundtrack to the console adventure, Final Fantasy VIII, the programme will include many of the most memorable and iconic computer game themes from the last four decades.

First performed at Glastonbury Festival 2017, PLAY! is conducted by Hazlewood and performed by a forty-piece ensemble of musicians that includes Army of Generals, an ensemble of orchestral musicians famed for their dynamic performances with artists as varied as The Unthanks and Father John Misty. Also part of the PLAY! ensemble are members of the world’s only professional ensemble of disabled musicians, The British Paraorchestra. Also formed by Hazelwood, The British Paraorchestra began in 2011 with a mission to challenge perceptions of disability and remove barriers to music-making for disabled musicians. The group performed alongside Coldplay during the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London.

Ahmad Jamal
Tuesday 8 May 2018 / Barbican Hall / 19:30
Tickets £25 – 50 plus booking fee

A rare London show from American jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal will take place at the Barbican on 8 May 2018. A greatly influential musician, composer and bandleader, Jamal has been a central figure of jazz for some five decades. Still prolific in 2017, Ahmad Jamal recently released a new album Marseille (Jazz Village/PIAS), an instrumental love letter to the iconic French city and an addition to a discography surpassing more than sixty records as a bandleader, not to mention compilations and guest appearances. Furthermore Jamal was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Grammys.

Joining Ahmad Jamal on stage for this performance will be Herlin Riley (drums), James Cammack (bass) and Manolo Badrena (percussion). Additionally, two guest performers will make an appearance – French/Congolese rapper, author and film director Abd al Malik and French/Beninese singer/songwriter Mina Agossi – both of whom also appear on the Marseille album.
