Listen

Ira Aldridge reads a review of his latest performance

to see that the critic has called it surprising. They were particularly shocked by the

way Aldridge navigated the most difficult passages of script. Ira thinks this ironic; he

always finds the difficult passages the easiest to perform well, muscle memory,

maybe. Another critic thought Aldridge would struggle with English words due to the

shape of his lips. This is sometime before he plays King Lear, carefully painted white

everywhere but his hands. Ira will be loved, eventually, a state funeral level of

adoration. They will even like his voice once they know he will not adlib, that he will

handle the difficult passages of English text in an acceptable fashion.
